Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on the process Dooyoo go through to decide Crowns. Is there is a set number awarded for each category during a time period, does the number of nominations actually have any baring, and does anyone feel it's easier to attain them in certain categories where there are less reviews written?

The reason I ask is I got a crown this morning for a review I only put up at about 1:30 in the morning, which seems a bit rapid even by Dooyoo's standards. Not that I'm complaining, just thought it was odd as sometimes they take several days. Smile

Crown day is on Tuesday - the vast bulk get awarded then - all nominations in the last seven days are considered, even ones put up in the wee hours.

The number of nominations is irrelevant - in theory, a review with just a single nomination could be crowned.

There's also no set limit for Crowns, in theory. Loads could be given out one week, then not as many.

One chap got a crown for a review being live for about 30 seconds. I suppose they have some left over and you got lucky. If you are a guide I suppose it helped.

I noticed this week, the first time in a long time, no reviews were awarded for Tuesday reviews. Maybe it was the bank holiday or maybe its a good point that reviews should be viewed by all over a set period of, say, 24 hours and then able to crown.

I suspect it was the bank holiday. I haven't been on yet (I've been out all day), but were crowns awarded today?

Its good that Tom bought this up and we wilL kee on eye on Teusdays crowns. Its not acceptable is reviews are crowned after few members have read them and they are of average content. I have noticed certain members are on to this late crownage and regulary posting Tuesday morning, which to be fair is excellent use of their initiative...

It's completely acceptable, Phil. Dooyoo decide whether a review is crown-worthy or not. The number of member reads/nominations is meaningless, ultimately, when it comes to Crowns. If Dooyoo think a review is good enough for a Crown and dish one out, why should it matter if only a few members have read it?

Guides are necessary to act as the focus of conspiracy theories on the site. If the guides weren't there, people would have to consider the possibility that maybe they're not winning crowns because they're not writing crownworthy reviews. The presence of guides offers a selection of comforting fictions that people can use to avoid having to examine the worth of what they write. They also soak up a lot of the bad feeling that always exists in web communities towards the people who run things, allowing dooyooteam to get away reasonably unscathed.

Plus, more realistically, helping members with advice and a fast-track way to contact dooyoo. And spotting abuse in its various forms. I realise that you don't value those things, but there are others who do. Try to understand that not everyone has exactly the same set of values as you do.

I know we need the guides in general but if dooyoo decide crowns then where do you come in on crowns?

Guides perform various duties as hogsflesh explained. When it comes to crowns, guides nominate and bring potential crown worthy reviews to dooyoo's attention. Of course other members do this too, but I think it would be reasonable to say that a guide nomination will have a little bit more weight than a regular member's nomination.

Not specifically. There are lots more members that Dooyoo trusts than just the guides and their ratings, comments and nominations are also given more weight than others.

If you're rating honestly and giving out the whole range of ratings where appropriate, then chances are, you're one of these "trusted" members too. If you're only giving out Us and VUs or are speed clicking or have been banned for abuse, then you're not.

No guides posted their reviews up today beetwen midnight and 10:30pm. Interesting. May be something in that Tom. If there is legs in it then the lady gide M*** will crown.

Maybe if you concentrated on improving the quality of your own reviews, you wouldn't need to spend any time worrying about what the guides do or don't do.

A little bit more care and attention on your own work (including, it has to be said, your posts on this very forum) would probably yield dividends.

I expect the guides were busy with their secret midnight guide meeting in a graveyard in Paris. From memory, this is about the time of year guides have to sacrifice a goat on the altar of Mendes. If they don't, their magic powers fade and they stop being able to block people from winning the crowns they deserve.

Damn it Hoggy - you were sworn to secrecy! Now everyone will want to be guides. Next you'll be giving away what we wear to our secret meeting.
