When thinking about making a purchase, where do you go for your information?

I'm talking about reasonably serious purchases... £20 - £30 and over, not a 40p chocolate bar.

Chocolate is so expensive now. Many are 50p or more Laughing

I voted specialist site. Hotels - tripadvisor all the way. Other goods e.g. electrical/photography/phones I would take a look at ciao or dooyoo to see how many reviews and what average rating was....films IMDB but that wouldnt be a purchase, as I usually make those spontaneously (but infrequently) but simply to see if it was worth watching. I would look at other price comparison sites and generally follow links. Cars - Autotrader/links.

I tend to do things in this order:

  • Official site: Here I get technical specs etc. and will visit a few of these until I can shortlist two or three items that I want.
  • Specialist site: This will go into all the details and if there are any issues on any of the items, they will be flagged up here first.
  • Dooyoo: I'll visit Dooyoo for a rough overview, but to be honest, by the time I've gotten this far, I've usually made up my mind and am really only looking for any big reasons NOT to purchase.
  • Finally, I'll go to a price comparison site and see where I can get it cheapest (although will also look for reliability and would easily shop at, say, Amazon rather than go to another website and save a fiver).

See, that is how to shop like a man.

I do the looking around bit first....before I do technical specs...! I.e. saw a car liked a car, test drove a car, came home and read a few reviews to back up my decision to buy a car!

I use price comparison site for big items. for books and small items I just stick with Amazon too, especially as I have invariably got some voucher credits from dooyoo... Laughing

I clicked the wrong button in the poll sorry.

I probably research hotels more often than anything else and would use TripAdvisor mainly or possibly expedia.com.

I would look at dooyoo for other purchases, such as a major household appliance, but I don't buy them that often obviously.

For technical things, camera, laptop etc, I probably use something like Which laptop.

I tend to use a combination of dooyoo and personal recommendation, though I will ask personally from folk I know on Dooyoo who have specialist knowledge...

For big purchases I tend to use whatever comes up first when I Google it.....unless I happen to be on Ciao or dooyoo at the point I decide I want to look for something!

With books/dvds I use Amazon as I really only want the gist of it, normally I'm only wanting a vague idea of if I want to buy a book which will only cost me 25p......I don't need to read a review for that!

When I booked a hotel in Glasgow I specifically picked one without a review on Ciao, so I could review it....that is how sad my life has become!
