PostSubject: How do you rate yours?   Tue Oct 06, 2009 6:59 am

Since it's been fairly quiet on here recently, I thought I'd start a topic on how people go about choosing which reviews to rate.

For me it tends to be a fairly simple process. I go to the Newest Review list and start reading from the top and keep going until I don't have time/want to read any more. This hasn't changed. I've never gone down the "a rate for a rate" route, although the main difference is that when Dooyoo was smaller, I would often return rates by default, since I'd come across their efforts in the New Reviews list.

Just going by the New Reviews list has some advantages. I've discovered some brilliant products in categories I wouldn't necessarily choose to read and some genuinely interesting and excellent pieces of writing by people who hadn't rated me/weren't in my Circle of Friends. It also means I don't know what I'm going to find out about when I log into Dooyoo.

On the downside, thanks to the massive influx of new writers (often fleeting, often churners), this now means I no longer necessarily get to rate the reviews of those who have rated me, since their latest efforts disappear off the New Reviews list at a very rapid pace. I know some dooyoo-ers see this as me "snubbing" their work and I've had a couple of messages to that effect. The increase in quantity also means I have to wade through a fair amount of junk to find the useful reviews, whereas if I stuck to known reviewers/my CoF, I would know what to expect.

So, I've now modified my approach slightly. I still go to the New Reviews list, but if someone has submitted several reviews in a day, I only read one of them (although that's the same as it always was.) If I see that someone has written several reviews in a very short time (typically 3 or more in a 20-30 minute period), I skip over them completely. If someone has given their review the same title as the product they are reviewing, I might also be tempted to skip it (depending on what mood I'm in!), since I generally feel if someone can't be bothered thinking up a vaguely decent title, it probably reflects the overall quality of their review (possibly unfair, I know, but...)

Finally, I know some people keep an anti-Circle of Friends - a "hit list" of people whose reviews they avoid. I don't tend to do this as weaker reviews are often from newer members and if they stick around, they tend to get better (as we all have) and I'd hate to unfairly brand them early on. I do keep a few names on a hit list (mainly those who revenge rate), but this tends to be very small.

So, how do you go about choosing which reviews to rate?

Fairly similar to you save for the categories I guide in.

I log in and read the new reviews in my two categories.

I then go to the new in list and read down. I skip obvious churners who I know are not plaigiarisers. I will check out new churners just to check it's not copied stuff. I skip categories which I have absolutely no interest in (but to be honest they rarely come back).

Occassionally if I have too much time on my hands I might do a rate path - I rate a review and then go to the profile of the last rater, rate one of theirs and so on. Leads to some good finds.

I don't have a "don't read" list, simply because I don't consider the identity of the author when reading (save for the obvious churners in the new in list where you can't avoid the identity issues).

I've also, occassionally used the "related reviews" link on the right hand side of teh review screen if I'm in a particularly interesting category.

I tend to read the new in list very sporadically only reading categories I am interested in. This often means people who rate me never get read by me but I think it is more genuine this way. I quite like the fact I have a few regular readers of my reviews whose reviews I have never read. Makes me feel like they genuinely like my writing.

Right now I'm not rating too much - a hangover from being a guide. Suddenly not having to read 700 goddamn film reviews every month is immensely liberating, even four months later.

Normally when not guiding I'll just look at reviews of things that I'm interested in, although I'll make an exception for some writers. One ex-member used to write about things like kitchen gadgets and pet accessories, which interest me not one jot, but she wrote so well I always enjoyed reading her reviews anyway.

I am also not reading religiously every day like I did when I was guiding, still having a bit of a break.

At one point I did just read down the new reviews list and I still start by scanning it, but with increased volume of reviews I have found that there are fewer that I actually want to read, e.g. all the food reviews and other churning. So now I tend to filter by catergory first and then read down my chosen category.

I don't return rate people that rate me, but if I happen to notice a rate or comment of either somebody new or somebody that I have enjoyed reading before then I might well just go over and read their latest. Very occasionally, I might pick somebody in my circle of friends at random and see what they have been writing lately.

I tend to look at the most recent reviews list by category and read what takes my fancy - generally Internet alongside Computers with a bit of Movies thrown in. But if I find a particularly interesting category, I might read a lot of the reviews in that, irrespective of age or quality.

There are a small amount of people I avoid unless they write in one of the Dooyoo-related categories - generally abusers or people who don't give enough rates back into the site.

I've found that I'm reading less and less these days. The amount of people writing solely for the money is disheartening, I'm finding.

It IS very, very quiet on here, isn't it???

I usually start by returning any rates I have received (I know, I know.....but it's just what I have always done), then I tend to read any alerts I have received by email.

Then I read the new reviews in the Sports category.

Then I will usually read reviews in a category that takes my fancy - Uk and Ireland or Travel - or I might just skip down the new reviews list looking for writers that I enjoy reading or interesting looking subject matters.

And like Claire I quite often like to do a rate chain; I find that can often lead to the discovey of writers I might not otherwise stumble across.

I try and return rates of those who have rated mine, I don't see what's wrong with doing that!

Nothing, if you're also reading around the site and not simply using your "return reads" policy as a method of attracting people to yours... you know, you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours kind of way. I've seen plenty of people claim this in the past and yet they're in a reads deficit. Not very community friendly IMO.

I'm not saying for one second that you are doing this, MM, just that this is my particular bugbear against this policy.

Yeah, I see your point. It's more obvious on Ciao with the "I'll give you an E if you give me one", in fact I've seen people actually saying that in their profiles that they will return all Es!
